Nandrolone (1‑β‑methylnandrolone) is a synthetic anabolic–androgenic steroid derived from testosterone. It has been used clinically for its muscle‑building properties, treatment of anemia, and certain bone disorders. In sports, however, it is commonly abused for performance enhancement.

Pharmacology & Mechanism




Androgen Receptor Binding: Nandrolone binds to the androgen receptor (AR) with high affinity, promoting protein synthesis in skeletal muscle.


Anabolic Dominance: Compared to testosterone, nandrolone shows a higher anabolic-to-androgenic ratio, meaning it tends to build muscle more than induce male secondary sexual characteristics.


Bone and Red Blood Cell Effects: It stimulates osteoblast activity and increases erythropoietin production, raising red blood cell mass.







Medical Uses (Approved)




Indication Typical Dose & Duration


Anemia of Chronic Kidney Disease (non-dialysis patients) 10–20 mg orally once daily for 6–12 weeks.


Chronic Anemia in Cancer Patients 10 mg/day for up to 6 months.


> These uses are limited; most clinicians now prefer recombinant erythropoietin analogues.
